PE

Intent:

Our PE curriculum is designed to foster physical literacy by nurturing a lifelong, positive relationship with movement and physical activity. We aim to support the holistic development of every child through inclusive and meaningful experiences that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being. Through the ‘Head, Heart, Hand’ approach, children build knowledge of rules and strategies (Head), learn how to participate safely and healthily (Heart), and develop the physical skills to move effectively and confidently (Hand). The curriculum is thoughtfully structured to build and progress these elements across all areas of PE.

Implementation:

Children are taught core skills across Dance, Gymnastics, Outdoor Sports, and Team Games, with lessons adapted to suit individual needs using the STEP principle (Space, Task, Equipment, People). Pupils participate in two PE lessons each week, covering two different sporting disciplines every half term. Teachers plan engaging and inclusive activities that support progression through the Head, Heart, and Hand framework, allowing children to develop understanding, physical competence, and confidence. Assessment is ongoing and embedded within lessons to ensure all pupils are supported and challenged appropriately.

Beyond the classroom, children are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities, including a lunchtime girls’ football club and various after-school sports clubs. Pupils are invited to attend competitive sporting events as well as inclusive festivals that emphasise participation and enjoyment. The school’s Sports Leaders act as role models, helping to run lunchtime clubs, support annual Sports Day, and assist with other sporting activities, inspiring younger pupils to get involved. Additionally, children in Year 4 attend swimming lessons once a week for 10 weeks during the Autumn Term. If they do not meet the expected standard, they are given further opportunities to develop their swimming skills in Years 5 and 6.

Impact:

Our approach motivates children to take part in physical activity with enthusiasm and confidence. Pupils develop a positive mindset towards being active and understand how to participate safely and effectively. They gain valuable skills, strategies, and experiences that not only support their physical development but also build resilience, teamwork, and self-awareness—tools they carry with them into adult life.
