At Wivelsfield Primary School, good relationships underpin our Values and are fundamental to our success in being a confident, happy, considerate and safe school community. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, self-care, diversity, sex, sexuality and health. We aim for the children in our school to acquire the appropriate knowledge, develop their skills and form positive beliefs, values and attitudes.
Implementation:
RSE is taught as explicit lessons through the PSHE scheme of work, Jigsaw RSE is specifically covered in the units ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’. The sequence of lessons allows the children to build their knowledge and skills year. However, lessons may be adapted to ensure the needs of the children within our school are met. Our Science curriculum also covers the statutory requirements during ‘Animals Including Humans’ and ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’ as well as being them embedded in day-to-day life of the school.
Children are taught by familiar, trusted adults which enable constructive supportive discussions around sensitive topics.
Our high expectations of behaviour, interpersonal relationships, respect and understanding of others reflect the British Values upheld in both our community and the wider world. Children will develop the key skills and will be prepared for the wider world beyond primary school, a world in which they can keep themselves safe and healthy with the support of the positive relationships they forge with those around them.
Impact:
Through a sequenced and well-taught curriculum, the children will be able to achieve their full potential and feel prepared for the next stage in their education. Pupil voice, staff voice and parental/carer voice all form part of our ongoing assessments to measure the impact of the subject.
As a result, our children are taught and develop the following attributes:
• The correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies while developing positive body awareness
• Develop confidence in talking about feelings and relationships
• Develop their self-esteem and feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy
• To value themselves and others
• Knowledge and understanding of puberty, an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
• A positive culture around issues of relationships and sexuality
• Understand about the diverse range of different relationships, and families, and their importance for the care and support of children
• Behave responsibly within relationships
• To recognise unsafe situations and be able to protect themselves and ask for help
• Understand that offence can be caused by the use of sexual terms as an insult
